Current front runners for Superhero RPG, Marvel Heroic Roleplaying

Well, I have read through the Marvel Universe game, and many of the reviews, and while I do like certain aspects of the game, I have to say the two games pictured above are still my current favorites.

Each game has it's good and bad aspects. The use of multiple dice, of different types in the Marvel Heroic Role playing initially put me off. I had just finished looking through the FFG Star Wars RPG, and my thoughts were tainted by that experience. Once I cleared my mind of that bias, I reread the Marvel rules, and 'saw the light', sort of... It is a much better system than I had, at first, thought. The game has a nice abstract aspect to it powers, guidelines not hard an fast details. The heroes profile lists assets and liabilities, tied to dice types. The profile allows/forces players think about what they are doing, to leverage these aspects and the associated dice. It is a nice system, that does not feel too gamey, and does not take one out of Role playing in favour of roll playing!

The system also encourages player to delve into their characters, to explore their strengths and their weaknesses. They experience system is geared to what would matter to the individual hero, less generic than most systems. Looking through the pre-generated Marvel characters, one can see how well the system can capture the essence of these heroes. Sure Thor and the Hulk have the same strength, and durability, but what separates them is the other aspects. All too often in other superhero games, there just does not seem to be enough distinction between this type of character. A tank is a tank , well not in this game because because you are not just your power, you are the total of your entire profile.
